How it started
On the flight home from my grandmother Rosemary’s funeral, I reached into my jacket pocket and found her prayer card. It was folded and crumpled. It was the one thing from that day I wanted to keep, and I had nearly lost it.
I kept thinking about how many of those cards end up in drawers, in old coats, in boxes nobody opens. Prayer cards, obituaries, photos, the address of a cemetery a family visits once a year. There was no good place to keep any of it.
Building it
I had never written a line of code. I built Custos at night, after my day job, one piece at a time, until it was something I could hand to my own family.
Custos is Latin for keeper. That is what I wanted it to be: a keeper for the people and pets you love, and a way to pass them on.
What it is today
Custos is a free app for iPhone and Android. You can scan a prayer card, import an obituary, add photos, mark a resting place, and carry their card in Apple Wallet. Families have created over 2,000 memorials with it so far, and every one of them started with someone who was loved.
There are no ads and no subscriptions.
